On Wednesday, March 27th, a training session titled “Leadership for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Universities and Research Organisations” was organized by an EDIRE partner from EDI Office TU Dublin.
The training was facilitated by Professor Yvonne Gilligan, Director of Director Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Key topics covered during the training session included:
The importance of leadership in supporting institutional EDI efforts towards structural change
· Leadership styles: What makes a good and effective leader for EDI? Key skills
· How to build leadership for EDI within an institution? Key tools
· How do leaders overcome obstacles and resistances to EDI? Some examples
What we learnt?
An effective EDI leader characteristics:
•Belief in a culture that values all individuals for their unique qualities and abilities: underpin is norms of justice, equity, inclusiveness
•Inhabit the role – it gives EDI substance and legitimacy
•Use other’s strategic work to embed EDI in programmes and practices
•Stand up to unfairness – point out inequalities and outdated attitudes
•Empower and enable others to be EDI allies and champions (especially students and young staff)
•Be open to learning from others life experiences, and working on one’s own biases – be prepared for uncomfortable self-discovery
