EDIRE in the Western Balkans

On Friday, October 17, 2025, Emina Ganić, a representative of the management of the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST), visited Belgrade, Republic of Serbia. During her visit, Ms. Ganić held a meeting with Aleksandra Drecun, President of Intersection – Centre for Science and Innovation, and Kosta Jovanović, Teaching Assistant at the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade.

Headquartered in Belgrade, Intersection – Centre for Science and Innovation is an international action tank and non-profit civil society organization dedicated to advancing responsible research and innovation, high-quality education, evidence-based policymaking, and good governance. The organization works to strengthen the connection between science and society, with a particular focus on Central and Southeastern Europe. Intersection brings together over 150 active members from research and educational institutions, the public sector, private companies, and civic organizations engaged in the field of science and society.

The organization possesses extensive expertise in areas such as research ethics, gender and science—particularly gendered research and innovation—open access, STEM education, science communication and engagement, and the development of science and innovation policies. It also has significant experience in organizing collaborative research and public science outreach activities, including focus groups, international conferences, seminars, training sessions, public debates, workshops, science camps, innovation labs, science festivals, national competitions, stakeholder consultations, and media campaigns.

Through its members, Intersection maintains a strong regional network and excellent connections with leading science policymakers in Southeastern Europe, as well as with senior management from research and educational institutions, media, and the private sector. As a civil society organization itself, it actively collaborates with other CSOs, professional associations, student networks, and numerous volunteers.

During the meeting, Ms. Ganić presented the outcomes of the EDIRE project and outlined future directions for cooperation, emphasizing the potential for Intersection to play a key role in partnership with SSST. This collaboration could include joint applications for European Union-funded projects and initiatives aimed at strengthening scientific research and collaboration between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe program for widening participation and spreading excellence under Grant Agreement number 101060145.
